It's not uncommon for sites, even large ones with lots of protection to get hacked. Indeed, it's usually the large and popular websites that are more prone to hacking. Security is a major problem these days. And if your site gets hacked, it can get damaged in a number of ways. You could either lose all your data, or your site could lose its ranking due to malicious activity. So while you can do backups and stuff, you cannot prevent someone from hacking into your site. But here are some tips to help you keep your site safe.

The #NoHacked campaign started by Google is a step towards spreading awareness about hacking, and how to stay safe from it. Here are some things you should do to stay safe on the internet.

Verify your site in Google Webmaster tools

Webmaster Tools is there for you during the good times and the bad ("Unfortunately, it appears that your site has been hacked." in Security Issues). However, many of the hacked sites are usually missing out on Google's hacked alerts because they’re not verified in Webmaster Tools!

Set up alerts

If your site starts associating with unrelated queries that are popular with spammers, such as queries related to pharmaceuticals, payday loans or replica goods, it’s time to start investigating for 3rd party attacks.

Set up Google Alerts to ensure your site isn't associated with unrelated queries related to hacking.

Update software

Make sure all the software on your site is up to date. This includes software for your web hosting, web server and content management system. Old software version is vulnerable because the more time it has been around, the longer the hackers have had to explore it and expose its vulnerabilities. Remember what happened with the Heartbleed bug?

Other tips

  • Make sure you do not use pirated software on your website. This could include freemium themes, plugins and so on.

  • Always use different passwords for your accounts, and keep changing them regularly. Enable two-step verification wherever possible. A lot of people keep the same password for each account, which makes it that much easier to hack them.

  • Regularly monitor traffic sources, search queries and landing pages, and to look out for spikes in traffic.

  • Choose a good hosting company that's knowledgeable in hacking issues and set up email forwarding in Webmaster Tools

  • Change the default table prefix in wp-config to a custom one when installing a new WordPress to lower the risk of the database from being hacked

Hacking is still a surprisingly common issue around the world so it is highly recommended for all webmasters to follow these useful tips. Keep tracking the #NoHacked hashtag on Google+ to get insights from other people and the latest information from Google.

Stay safe :)
